As these photos can attest Hardenburg is one of the best castle sites to visit. Some restoration work has been done to keep walls from collapsing and make passages safe. Thus, you will see examples like that below where windows have been redone and new mortar added. Otherwise, the ruins are largely authentic.
In the 1500s, Hardenburg was rebuilt as a Renaissance-style fortress, and with it came the need to develop an elaborate garden for the enjoyment of the residents and guests. Yet, even with such a beautiful area, beyond are a set of battlements to protect the fortress from the east.
