The western side of the castle, with a garderobe visible. Garderobes were toilets, with the waste being deposited at the base of the castle wall to be shoveled away later. Garderobes actually had to have locks on them, both over the toilet and a door to the small room to keep spies from infiltrating. Below, a view towards the eastern battlement from the river road.
Below right, not far from Cochem to the west is another castle, this one in ruins. This is Winneburg. I didn't have the time to explore this in 2005 or 07, but finally did in 2008. See the separate page for this castle.
